This program is confusing, yes, but far from unworkable, or else a much larger majority of the people on this forum would be out of status and twiddling their thumbs waiting for an inland application to finish. It's really not that hard to try to maintain your status, even if you are only extending your status as a visitor. And I wouldn't say they allow people to sponsor "perfect strangers", that's making a lot of assumptions. No one is trying to say the CIC is extremely efficient and wonderful, either.

Well since it's so workable I suppose all the immigration lawyers and, this entire site with it's hundreds of thousands of informative posts providing help to the thousands of people so far out of their depth with CIC who have nowhere to turn to can just close up as processing times are getting shorter and shorter. (Poe's Law intended)

I believe that any entity that requires such a large amount and regular use of third parties to answer basic questions is unworkable. When people who are only required to provide basic information (that they can find or attain easily IF THEY KNOW what they are required to do) find themselves in unalterable situations because of the fact that they didn't know I believe that that entity didn't provide the proper information as to it's requirements. At the very least, a phone service or something where those questions can be answered as it shouldn't fall onto a peer to peer website such as this to do the government's job for them.

It's really not that hard to try to maintain your status, even if you are only extending your status as a visitor.
Shoulda coulda woulda. Bad advice, delayed documents, figured we would have the spousal application sent in and the request for one more doc that had to be sent from home then .... too late.

And I wouldn't say they allow people to sponsor "perfect strangers", that's making a lot of assumptions.
I would. From what I understand the first time anybody from Canada laid eyes on the refugees was when they arrived yet they were able to sponsor and have their sponsorship approved Pronto without having any relationship whatsoever. People here are married to the ones they want to sponsor yet it takes years. I'd say something is very wrong and UNWORKABLE.

No one is trying to say the CIC is extremely efficient and wonderful, either.
Good as that would be a fib of large proportions. I'm beginning to see the tip of the iceberg and how lucky I am compared to some here.

They took a small step in the right direction with the OWP system. I think a process where the spouse gets a OWP quickly after the application is sent in and then the rest of the inland or outland PR application can be processed while the spouse is allowed to work makes the most sense, while working to cut down processing times. 4 months for the OWP is way too long.
But for the record, the Conservatives did this. Not the Liberals.

Yeah, the OWP and conditional PR I think were both good moves by them. The complete neglect of maintaining reasonable processing times undoing any of that. Surprised it ever got to that stage, when you compare Canadas system with countries of similar standing its not a good look.

Totally agree. Taking away conditional PR is a bad move - all it does is bring an old problem back.

But don't worry, not only can they take away a positive safety net for Canadians they can champion it falsely as giving people hope of immediate PR status.

related to processing times, if they can bring down family processing times "radically" we would love that... Just out of curiosity I searched for a few processing times of some random countries and found the UK only takes 12 weeks. Now if Canada could follow suit with that kind of time or shorter, that would be great...

Family Visa UK - 12 weeks
https://www.gov.uk/join-family-in-uk

Family Visa - Australia - 6-8 months
https://www.border.gov.au/about/access-accountability/service-standards/family-visa-processing-times

New Zealand - 6-9 months
http://www.immigration.govt.nz/branch/aucklandcentralhome/processingtimes/

Norway - 4 months

UK many financial requirements to sponsor a spouse, many people can't meet the requirement so much fewer applications to process.

Norway, I've put in my details and I chose that I am a permanent resident in Norway and the processing time I am given is 18 months.

No process is ideal, and no process is the same when comparing countries

Keep in mind as well that these are the times they are estimating.

Could be quicker or longer as well ;)

Mr. McCallum, . . . said that he finds it “abominable” that it takes almost two years for the spousal immigration applications to be processed, and after arriving in Canada, another two years to receive permanent-resident status.
This sounds EXACTLY like the 'live-in caregiver' process (which may be similar to others that I'm not aware). Perhaps he heard a 'live-in caregiver' story from one of his constituents.

Will this really happen? If so, I wonder when it will happen.

I have been in the pr process for 2+ years. I filed outland and I am a US citizen. It is really ridiculous that it is taking this long.

LCP PR processing times are actually closer to 4 years.

As you can see from this thread that no it is very unlikely it will happen.
