Hi everyone,

I'm hoping you can help me out. I've searched the forum but canr quite find what I'm looking for and I'm in need of some advice.

I am Canadian and my husband of 2.5 years is Portuguese and we are both living and working in Dubai, UAE with plans to submit our application for his PR visa at the beginning of July to land in Canada together next April, May or June.

As a Portuguese citizen and a UAE resident, my husband can choose to have his application processed in either Abu Dhabi or Paris. Obviously Abu Dhabi is more convenient in case of the need for an interview and for passport submission, but the CIC website shows an average processing time of 20 months, whereas Paris shows an average of 9. I contacted the visa office in Abu Dhabi and they said that they actually average only 6 months.

Question is: do I believe the information given to me by them directly and take the chance, or go by the time frames provided by CIC and submit to Paris?

Question #2: What exactly do they check for the Sponsor?? Why does it take so long? I lived in Brazil and the Caribbean and they ask for all of the addresses and phone numbers which I don't really remember as it was 8+ years ago and haven't lived in Canada for 10 years. Will it take them longer to check international databases in those countries or do they just check that I don't have previous sponsorships in Canada or any of those other things they list that prevent you from sponsoring?

Thanks!

I would say - go for Paris. It's most likely going to be faster. Paris has a pretty good record, and a lot of people are done before the 6 months mark. AbuDhabi might not even touch your file (because of the long queue and the backlog of applications) before 6 to 9 months, where you will most likely be done before that in Paris.

As a visa-exempt, your husband won't be required to send his passport to Paris - they will issue the COPR ( Confirmation of PR), and send it to his mailing address, wherever that is. The only reason why I would advise to choose AbuDhabi is if you have a reason to think they will ask for an interview. If you have been married for 2.5 years, and living together all that time, and have no specific red flag (huge gap difference, previous marriage or sponsorship etc.) then most likely an interview won't be required... so Paris is a better option.

Sponsor: they will check your background, and your intention to return to Canada. Stage 1 ( where the sponsor is checked) is usually a fairly straightforward process. Stage 2 is what takes time, and part of it is backlog of applications. There is also more extensive background checks (of the applicants) and they go through the proofs that the relationship is genuine.

Remember: the posted timeline is the time it takes to complete 80% of the applications, so quite a few are done before that - in fact, the majority are.

Good luck,
Sweden

Hello dear.

Paris is by far your best choice! Not only it has a faster posted processing time but in reality they are much faster. Couple of members that I know who had applied in February in Paris have already got their COPR's and one of them is already in Canada
If I were you I take Paris 100%

Good luck and all the best

Thanks for all the great information -- I had no idea about the COPR but I'm super happy about not having to send in his passport because we need them for work. Its funny because I emailed the Paris office directly asking about the passport submission and how that worked but they never mentioned it. That was the main reason I was thinking about submitting in Abu Dhabi, actually.

I don't think (or I hope) we won't need an interview. We have been together over 5 years, living together since we got married as its not legal here before and have loads and loads of evidence from our travels together, our home life and our wedding/honeymoon. And we are only a few years apart in age and whatnot.

Paris it is then! Thanks!

Paris is much faster!!
A couple friends of ours applied through Paris and it only took him 3 months from when Paris received the application to when he landed back in Canada.

Hello there friend

Please don't hold me accountable :D but I believe your next step should be PPR. They have requested RPRF from you so it looks like most likely your interview will be waived!
Hold on to your breath and soon you will receive good news
