I am in the process of applying open work permit for my spouse who is in Canada based on my study permit (I'm a full time international student currently in Canada). Is there any requirement if my spouse has to take employment within a certain amount of time after approval or can she legally stay during the duration of the open work permit without ever being employed? I just want to get clarification if there are any rules tied to the spouse open work permit that we should follow and if employment is part of the requirement of the open work permit. I really appreciate the valuable information.

There is no such requirement.

My studies will actually start at the end of January next month. Is it recommended to apply for the spouse open work permit now or after my studies have started next month for a better chance of approval? Since it does take some time to actually get the work permit? Appreciate the information!

I don't know. Suggest you post your question either to the International Students or Foreign Workers section of the forum.
