Hello,

I have a question for the experts here =)

I am a canadian citizen, my fiance is an indian national. We are planning to get married in the UK through a religious ceremony in our place of worship.

Will I have any potential sponsorship issues that I should be aware of? I don't have any pictures with me and my wife together in the same picture, but we shall have pictures of the religious ceremony or NIKAH (as we call it).

Also - as I mentioned above, we don't have a legal marriage certificate from england, or canada - just the religious document of proof of marriage, which is called a NIKAH-NAMA, issued by the religious leader who shall be leading my marriage ceremony. Will this be sufficient? or is a legal document attested by the government required for me to sponsor my spouse?

All documents which you are submitting must be translated in English. Nikah-Nama is considered to be accepted legally as that is considered as a marriage certificate.

In your application, Immigration officers look for how couple meet, how long they know each other, evidences or any stuff that can support your application would be beneficial. Normally they (IO) require photographs showing friends, relatives attended your marriage ceremony.

Please note, I am not an Immigration Consultant or Lawyer, but suggest opnions as per experience and learning across various answers from this forum.

1. The marriage will have to be registered if you want Immigration to accept it.
2. You know have to the follow these steps? http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/marriages/index.asp to marry in the UK

Thanks for your wonderful responses. And thanks for the quick replies. I appreciate it.

About the pictures - we don't have pictures of the two of us together - but we DO have pictures of the wedding ceremony, with relatives and stuff - that's ok??

I'm not sure what kind of pictures they want. If I understand - the point of the pictures is only to prove that we ACTUALLY ARE married - and not just making up a hoax for immigration purposes right? And in that case, pictures of the ceremony should suffice??

thanks again.....

I am no expert but many Islamic marriages take place with the husband and wife in separate rooms. In my case, my husband and I did not sit side by side until after the Nikkah. As long as you have pictures of you signing and of her signing...I think you will be okay. And as PPM said, just register your marriage at your local city hall. In Islam the only thing we "require" is a Nikkah but governments require the marriage license issued by your city for it to be a "real" wedding. Othewise, my guess is you are on "legally married"

I'm not an expert either and I hate to put a damper on things but for CIC pictures of a marriage ceremony & reception isn't always enough nor is it sufficient proof in their eyes. I recently heard that CIC was putting extra emphasis on marriages between Canadians and Indian nationals because they found out that there is a company in India (not sure where) that actually stages wedding pictures and ceremony specifically for Immigration purposes. CIC caught wind of it when they realized they were seeing the same "guests" in pictures submitted to CIC over and over again in several different applications.

If your relationship is genuine and you can prove well enough, you should be just fine! All the best!

msgomez - i see. Yeah, someone was tellin me that it was a bit tougher for indian nationals.

But - if not pictures, then what other pieces of proof are they looking for??
