Hello All,

Permanent resident here.

I am planning to wed the girl who is fixed for me in the month of August of 2020 in India. But just to avoid we being away each other when the PR spousal application is initiated after our marriage in August 2020 , I am planning to do a grand engagement ceremony in my home country coming January , but register a marriage legally so I can get the legal marriage certificate to initiate the PR process immediately for my spouse in early February.

I am totally aware that marriage should be supported with proper evidences such as Photographs which i am planning to use from engagement ceremony, some pictures of we being each other pre and post engagement, pictures of us actually registering our marriage in a local registrar office of my city I am originally from, Wedding invitation showing the date when the intended marriage is getting registered.

My concern is now that this route will cause any delays or issues during the course of my application which will even further delay the application process.

Has someone tried this before and successfully received spousal PR within the stipulated processing times?

If Yes, what are the Do's and Don't with the process that I should be aware of?

Any kind of suggestions or advise is highly appreciated.

Are you aware that as a PR, you must be living in Canada at the time you sponsor your spouse for PR and must continue to live in Canada while the application is processed until it is approved? You can take a few short (2-3 week) trips outside of Canada - but must be living in Canada for the majority of the time the application is in progress.

If you are thinking of applying with nikha only, this is not a good idea and creates a significant risk your application will be refused. Wait until after August to apply.

CIC has seen many versions of this before. People do a court marriage or part of a ceremony to start the sponsorship process. The visa agents are very familiar with the marriage traditions of various religious and ethnic groups. Doesn’t help your application when you try to mislead CIC and tell them you are fully married. Unless you truly get married and have pictures showing that you are living as man and wife then you will be denied and will have to reapply.

Thanks for your help guys. This is an eye opener. Will make arrangements to proceed with the best possible and tried and tested method rather going into agony by taking refusal for misleading.
