I have been in Ontario, Canada for three months looking for a job. I moved here from sunny California to be with my girlfriend. It has been very difficult for me to find a job because I am foreign. I don't have a work permit, but i was told by the Canadian Immigration that once I get a job offer I can get one. My girl friend is a Canadian Citizen and she feels that if we get married it will make it a lot easier since I will be able to apply for a permanent resident card. And with that i will not need a work permit to find a job. I have had many employers interested in me, but they were not willing to assist me in getting a work permit. I do love my girl friend and I do plan on marring her in the future, but i would hate for it to be this way. I want to know your thoughts. Any suggestions or comments may help. Thank you! I love Canada!!

As for your job prospects, there is an another option. If you have an occupation listed under the NAFTA approved field, you can apply for TN visa at the border with a job offer.

Otherwise, you would require a LMO from employers before you can apply for work visa like everyone else.

There is also a thing call "SWAP". I am not familiar with it but it is an equivalent to IEC, but between US and Canada.

If you marry her, she can apply to sponsor you to be a Permanent Resident. It might take up to a year to process the application, but once you are a Permanent Resident, you have the same rights to apply for and get jobs as a Canadian citizen (except for some government jobs.) If you live together for 12 months, she can then sponsor you are her common-law spouse, but you have to prove you were living together for that time. So you will need a joint lease or mortgage, both names on the utility bills, or some utility bills in your name and some in hers both going to the same address, mail addressed to both of you going to the same address, a joint bank account, etc. If you cannot get some of these things, remember you need something official that proves you were living together for 12 months.
