Hello,

I am sponsoring my wife from Pakistan. Does she need to do her medical when I am filing all documents for immigration. Or the medical can wait for later ? Please advise

Thank you,

Medical exam for permanent residents
If you apply for permanent residence, you must have an immigration medical exam. Your dependants must also have a medical exam, even if they are not coming with you.

Medical exam instructions

Your own doctor cannot do the medical exam. You must see a doctor on the list of panel physicians.

The panel physician will do a complete medical exam and may refer you for chest x-rays and laboratory tests. Once your exam has been completed, the physician will send the results to CIC.

The panel physician does not make the final decision about your medical exam. CIC makes that decision. If there is a problem with your medical exam, the visa office will contact you in writing.

When you go to your appointment, you must bring:

proper identification (you will need at least one document with your photograph and signature, such as a passport, driver’s licence or national identity card)
eye glasses or contact lenses, if you wear them
any medical reports or test results that you have regarding previous or existing medical conditions, and
the Medical Report form (IMM 1017E), if you do not undergo an up-front medical exam. The visa office will send you this form.
You may have to bring:

Four recent photographs. You will need to bring these only if the doctor you select from the list of panel physicians does not work with CIC via the eMedical electronic system. Please check with the doctor’s office when you book your appointment.
Note: It is important that you tell the doctor about any previous or existing medical conditions. Processing your medical exam could take longer if you do not.

There are two ways you can have an immigration medical exam, depending on your immigration category

Wait for instructions once you have submitted your application
Instructions issued by CIC:

You will be instructed to go for a medical exam within 60 days of receiving the notice.

Instructions issued by Border Services Officer:

If you make a refugee claim at a port of entry, a Border Services Officer will instruct you to get a medical exam within 30 days.

Note: Failure to follow these instructions may result in your application being refused.

Undergo your exam before you submit your application (Only for certain Family Class applicants)
This is called an up front medical exam.

You can contact a panel physician directly to get your medical exam if you apply under one of the following categories:

Family Class: Spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner
Family Class: Dependent children of the sponsor or the sponsor’s spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner
Once your medical exam has been completed, the doctor will give you a document confirming that you underwent a medical exam. You must include a copy of that document with your application.

If the doctor works with the eMedical electronic system:

they will give you an up-front medical notification printout.
If the doctor works with a paper system:

they will give you a copy of the IMM 1017B Upfront Medical Report form.
You must attach that form to your application before you submit it to the visa office. If you apply online, you must upload that form before you can submit your application.

Thank you,
She needs to do the medical upfront, so that you can include form IMM 1017 in the file. The form will be given to her after the medical exam.

If not, the application will most likely be returned (just happened a few days ago to a fellow forum member).

Thank you,

One more question?

It has taken me almost 4 months now to get all the documents together and so much so that I am getting worried that its been this late. Would this be a issue when filling for immigration ? I got married in march and got back to Canada in April which makes this the 5th month and I still have to do the medical for my wife.

That is not a problem, just be sure to check all your documents and be sure they are still all the same and haven't been updated since you started them. Sometimes they update something and it will change versions, just check the version you currently have against the current version at the time you are ready to send it all in.

I think CIC might ask questions if more than a year went by.

Thank you,
hi , i believe i am the most credible and most authoritative regarding this concern. here is our story, we mailed our application i think july 26 and as per tracking number the same was received on july 29. we failed to include proof of medical exam. on august 5 i submitted myself for an upfront medical. on august
17 my husband said that CIC returned our application. in a letter dated august 12 CIC informed us that they cannot process our application due to missing medical documents. they are asking us to resubmit and include medical documents. i already mailed the proof of medical. hopefully we can resubmit tomorrow.
