Hi all,

Long-time lurker here who has finally decided to take the plunge and apply for residence through my wife.

Some background...

My wife is Canadian and currently has indefinite leave to remain in the UK. She has lived here since 2006, we married in 2015 and have two young children, both of whom hold dual British & Canadian passports.

We've found the forum incredibly useful for information regarding our application that wasn't immediately obvious in the guides (thank you!) but have a few remaining queries that we've struggled to find the answers to. Apologies if we have missed these elsewhere.

  • Do I still need to include my wife and children under the dependents section on the generic application form if they are already Canadian citizens? I was slightly confused about the wording in this case.

  • What evidence do we need to show how my wife is going to support me financially, especially as we don't yet have jobs in Canada?

  • What evidence do we need to provide about where we are going to live? The plan at present is for us to live with my wife's parents temporarily until we have a place of our own. Will letters from my wife's parents and our mutual friends who live in Canada be suitable to say we intend to live there?

  • I was made redundant in December and as yet am still unemployed. Would it be better to hold off on sending the application until I am employed again or will this not make any difference? I ask because of the employment questions within the application and the potential of gaining employment during the application process.

Thanks very much for reading and for any help. Obviously appreciate that these questions may have been answered in the forum a number of times previously, but we just wanted to be sure incase specific requirements have changed over time.

1. No.

2. How do you support yourselves now? What is your income potential, savings, investments, family assistance, etc.? How do you plan to support yourselves? Just explain.

3. Yes, get letters. Your wife will need to prove that she intends to return to Canada. She will need to show more than letters.

4. No need to wait.

CIC has requested things like proof that you have resigned from your current jobs, taken steps to sell your home or give notice if a lease, applied for jobs in Canada or secured jobs, made enquires about moving, making enquires about future schools for your children, contacted a real estate agent, etc. Some have sent part of the family ahead to Canada. Many unfortunately never relocated but received PR cards so CIC has become more demanding in terms of proof.

Hi both,

Thanks very much for the quick replies and information, really appreciate it and certianly makes things clearer.

In regards to more than letters, will this be evidence of applying for jobs, mortgage enquiries etc as stated above? We just weren't sure what you meant by 'more' exactly?

Lots of examples if you search the forum since many have recently been asked for more proof of intent to move back to Canada.
