Hi,

What are the possibility of having a spouse study in Canada and do an outland application?

What is the likelihood of getting a study visa before getting legally married but marrying after?

What is the likelihood of getting a study visa after getting legally married?

Is this better than a visitor visa as a visitor visa is 6 month's right?

Thanks

It depends on a number of factors. A study permit isn't necessarily an easier approval to obtain. CIC will look to see that your spouse is a genuine student and isn't just using the visa as a means of coming to Canada to stay long term. This means that the education they decide to take in Canada must make sense in light of their past education and work experiences. So your spouse needs to pick the right course / program. University programs (bachelor, master's, PhD) generally have a higher acceptance rate than diplomas or post graduate diplomas. Forget about having your spouse come to take English classes, these study permits have the highest refusal rates. In addition to the above, CIC will also look for evidence that your spouse has tied to their home country and your spouse will also have to demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover their education. Sufficient funds means showing a bank account balance of $10K for living expenses + first year tuition + a few extra thousand for travel expenses. So showing a bank balance of at least $25K will likely be required to be approved.

Note that the program your spouse is planning to study must be more than six months in length and must be full time in order for a study permit to be approved.

Thanks Scylia!

Some more questions. Does the spouse need a travel visa to be able to get that study visa?

Is it easier to apply for the study visa before getting married? Is this more likely to be approved?

What happens if we get married after the visa is approved? I think to safeguard the visa and passport we are not looking at changing her family name at this stage.

On a student visa, can she travel in and out of the country to visit family?

Seriously, would this be a better option than a 6 month visitors visa?

Thanks!

I would recommend that you post your study permit questions to the International Students section of the forum.

To answer two questions, it will likely be easier to get an approval before marriage.

I have no idea if this is a better option than a visitor visa - there are too many variables.

Hi

I'm searching all over the internet for the same exact question.

Im an Egyptian married to an Egyptian/Canadian.
we both live in Egypt.

We both want to study in Canada, i want to do an advanced certificate ( it is related to both my work experience + my bachelor degree) and it will last for two years.

If i liked staying in Canada i might want to immigrate.

my question: Im legally married in Egypt but not in Canada, would be safer if I apply for a student visa and then legally get married when i land in Canada and two years later if i liked the country i apply for my husband's sponsorship?

Im worried my visa gets rejected ( all my friends who applied for visitor's visa and are married to canadians they get a hard time in issuing their visas and they get it after several refusal) and worried if they ask me to apply for my husband's sponsorship from now, he doesn't live in Canada and of course no job and my studies will begin in May 2015.

what's your advice please?

Thanks!

Hi CarineAMR

Is your husband a canadian citizen or permanent resident?

I think your Egyptian marriage is valid in canada.

Thanks...
