Spousal Sponsorship: Approval of Sponsorship first? Or all at once?

Hey guys,

I'm sorry if this has been asked before; however, I was curious about a couple things. I'll start off with some basic information about me first:

1.) I am a Canadian Citizen (born and raised here) and I'm looking to sponsor my fiance whom is an American Citizen currently residing in the United States.
2.) She will be coming up to Canada in a a few weeks when we'll get married. We plan on having a civil ceremony (legally married) only and then start the application process.
3.) We plan on applying as Outland (from my research I determined this was the best bet)

Now here is where my question comes in:

So, do I need so submit my application package to see if I qualify as a sponsor FIRST? or Can I submit all of the paper work including Sponsorship Eligibility as well as her and I's Sponsorship/PR application?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks!

You have to submit the entire application package together (both sponsor and applicant). If you submit only half, it will be returned to you unprocessed.

Yes you have to submit the entire package, it may differ depending on where your applying from. From my experience of living in the uk whilst my husband lives in Canada, we had to submit the full package to Mississauga including an upfront medial examination. The Case Processing Centre in Mississauga will determine your eligibility as a sponsor, if your accepted then your wife's application will be sent to the closest VO. I'm not from the States so I wouldn't know where that is.
Make sure to read over everything because it's a right pain having to send extra documents, it obviously makes your waiting longer!
Good Luck!

You mentioned the upfront medical portion; now, I'm assuming I need to submit that with the application, correct?

While some have submitted applications without the medical (yours truly, though it wasn't a decision I made, I was just dumb), yes, the medical should be done and proof that you did it should be included with the application packet. The medical exam expires one year from the date it was completed (CIC may choose to extend that time, but it's up to them, and like everything else, they're horribly inconsistent with extensions), so you'll want to schedule your medical exam near the time when you plan to send off your application.

You'll also need to get police certificates from any country in which the PR applicant has lived for at least 6 consecutive months since the age of 18. Police certificates must be received by CIC (as a part of the application packet) no more than three months after the certificate was issued.

Yes all has to be done upfront! once the medical has been completed they'll give you a receipt and you add that to your application. Its basically just proof of the medical being completed.
QuebecOkie is right about the police certificate too, that needs to be included in the application.
You'll have to find the checklist which is online with the application forms, it tells you everything you need to include and you can tick them off so you know you've included them

Thank you again for all of the information - it really helps getting straight answers.

Just to be clear; are all applications initially sent to Mississauga? (Including inland and outland)
