Hi everyone, I'd really appreciate any help I can get here because this is the second time our paperwork has been returned to us. For context, I am a Canadian citizen trying to sponsor my American wife. She has a temporary residency permit which they've been really great at renewing. I'm just having trouble understanding why our paperwork is getting sent back. There are three items they've highlighted:
  • Documents translated into English or French: she was born in Brazil, so her birth certificate is in Portuguese. We'd had her birth certificate translated by the Multicultural Council of Windsor, with a signed affidavit attached. The only thing I can think of is that I made the copy of the document myself and brought it to them instead of having it a certified copy. Is it possible that it's that simple of an error? If so, please let me know what I need to do.
  • Marriage certificate: I'm really confused here because I've sent in every document I've received from the state of Ohio, where we were married. We recently went back to the courthouse and requested our marriage certificate and they gave us a "marriage record" and said that's the only thing they have. What are they looking for?
  • The last item was her passport pictures, but I believe that's because of the time that elapsed between the first and second times that we sent the paperwork.
Her temporary residency expires in June (they gave us a year) and I'd really like to get this in by the end of the month. If I could get any help here that would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry to hear it's been returned again, that is frustrating for sure.

Birth cert - If you didn't send a certified copy, then that could be the reason why.
Marriage cert - do you have the real one? If not, try to get it and have that certified as well and send that in. Unless they ask for the actual document - the checklist will say what is needed.
PP photos - need to be within 3 or 6 months of when it's taken and sent to them. Can't remember but the checklist will say how many months.

If you can, definitely call them to clarify if the checklist is still unclear. Hopefully someone else can also chime in and offer more advice. Good luck!
