Spousal Sponsorship and Work Permit Application at the same time

Hi everyone,

I'm a Dutch citizen currently working in Canada on Working holiday visa under the IEC program that will expire in June 2015. My spouse and I are planning to submit our spouse sponsorship application shortly, and I have a question regarding the work permit application that is recommended to be send in at the same time. I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I'm kind of getting lost in all the forms and information, so here it is: what kind of work permit application do I have to submit exactly and would I be eligible with my working holiday visa?

Any help is appreciated!

Thank you thank you,

Laura

Because you are on an IEC and IECs can't be extended, you don't benefit from implied status. This means that when your IEC expires, you will have to stop working (even if you have submitted an open work permit application). Since you are a Dutch citizen, you would be far better off applying outland (rather than inland).

Hi Laura,

I was caught in the same predicament back in 2005. I did however, apply for an extension at the time and was told that I could continue to work (implied status) until a decision was made, even though as scylla says the work visas cannot be extended and this was made clear to me. I'm not sure whether times have changed since then and they no longer will do this but it bought me an extra couple of months before they finally sent me a letter saying my application was denied. I eventually came back to the UK and my other half got a work visa for the UK. However, as Scylla says its far better and faster to apply outland.
