Hi Everyone. Noobie here looking for help.... ???

I've been with my girlfriend for 11 years. She is Canadian and I'm English, and we live together in the UK.

We want to move to Canada once my girlfriend has finished Uni, to work and start a family, and we want to possibly come back to the UK at a later date, so obviously want the door to remain open.

Can anyone tell me what visa would we need and what would be the best way to go about it? We aren't married, and at the moment my girlfriend is living here with indefinite leave to remain in the UK. We are trying to work out if it would be beneficial for her to sponsor me to move over there on a spousal visa and get married whilst over there, but are unsure about the implications it would have on returning to the UK with regards to passports/duel citizenship etc, and who should do what.

Is there anything we can do that will tick both boxes so that we can come back to the UK permanently? Does anyone know how much time and money will that would cost for sponsorship etc.

We have been back and forth a few times, both on unmarried partner and working holiday visa's. If anyone else has been in the same situation it would be great to connect with them.

Looking forward (and thanks in advance) to any advice coming this way :)

If you have lived together for at least 12 consecutive months, then she could sponsor you as her common-law partner. Once completed, that would grant you PR status in Canada.
She would need to prove her intent to return to Canada once you are granted PR.

If you tell them that you intend to live permanently in the UK, you will have problems. Spouse sponsorship is for those who intend to live in Canada.

Cost is $1040, plus medical and any fees for copies or notaries as required in your country-specific guide. For UK applicants, it's generally less than a year.

My suggestion would be, get married in the UK. Then, she can apply for a UK passport under section 6(2) as a spouse. Finally, when you are both ready, she can sponsor you for Canadian PR under Family Class. That leaves as many doors open as possible, and is what we did.
