My wife recently got the approval letter that she can sponsor me as we applied for outland sponsorship through the U.S. My questions can I show the approval letter to border control instead of the payment receipt when I enter Canada? Of course I will show copy of the marriage certificate & a return ticket.

You can keep the approval letter as proof if needed. Chances are though that they won't even ask. But it is good to have as backup. My wife visited me a few times during the sponsorship process and the only thing they ever really seemed interested in was when she was leaving Canada and if she had a ticket already (they didn't even ask her to provide proof of the ticket).
