Dear Members,

I have recently got passport request and am planning to land in April 2016. My wife is currently in US pursuing her research. When I applied in Express Entry, I mentioned that my wife would not be accompanying.

I want to apply for PR for my wife once I settle down there.
1. Could anyone please suggest how should I proceed? Shall I put an application for her in Express Entry or Spousal sponsorship?
2. Does spousal sponsorship really takes 17 months?
3. Can I get a TRV (is it same as visitior visa?) for her so that she can visit me? Is there really chances for rejection of TRV?
4. For what duration normally a visitor visa is stamped, considering we tell them that the person would be visiting for tourism?
5. Is it better to apply for Visitor visa for her before I land in Canada or after I land?

Kindly suggest.

i am in the same situation..let me know if you find anything. I am planning to apply for my wife PR. IT does take 17 months depending on which country office your file is assigned. Where are you from originally ? From the US it takes 33-39 months. But recently they stopped showing processing times by countries.. now its standard 18 mos. Hope it reduces

I am from India. I have got mixed responses. People are saying that I can inform Visa office that i want to make my wife as accompanying. Do you think it is a good idea? Also, explain me your situation a little so that i can also understand.

It doesn't take more than 2 years to sponsor an American spouse. More like 4-12 months unless you have some major red flags and get stuck with a wait for an interview.

Thanks for your response. My wife is an indian citizen who is a research fellow in US now (on J1 visa). One more request. I beg you to please tell me if you know how much time would it take for sponsorship in my case. Else, can i call visa office now to include my wife as accompanying.

Kindly let me know. I am in a huge stress and am not able to think anything. Please help me.

If she gets processed through Ottawa since she's living in the US it will be 4-12 months.

If she gets processed through New Delhi, I suggest you check out this thread for processing times:

I don't know much about changing spouses to accompanying, I haven't dealt with that before so I can't help you there.

In any case, it should not be more than 17 months as mentioned on cic website? Or would it really be close to 33-39 months as ciscobud mentioned? I hope application doesn't go to new york or los angeles office.

If you look at the posts on the main forum separated by month, you will see that Outland people in August 2015 and even September are hearing back. Granted, that's pretty early but it's still possible. It totally depends on your case. It's usually safe to assume about a year for processing. CIC has been changing those months they show on their website randomly and aren't very reliable. You will likely NOT go to the New York/Los Angeles offices unless there is "red flags" on your application that require an interview. If you have a straightforward application it will be much quicker. Red flags could include previous sponsorships, little proof of a genuine relationship, a criminal background, large differences in age/education/religion, a secret marriage, etc.
