Hi,

I'm a Canadian citizen and I would like to sponsor my spouse who currently lives in a foreign country. I am a student and don't have a lot of income. Is there a minimum income requirement for sponsoring a spouse? If not, why do they ask for proof of income on the forms.. (or am I looking at the wrong forms). If someone could please point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks

P

There is no minimum income requirement for spousal sponsorship.

5.33. Exception to minimum necessary income requirement
The ability to meet the minimum income requirement is mandatory, unless the
sponsor is sponsoring a spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner or a
dependent child where the child has no dependent children of their own. This
exception also applies to persons under the age of 18 whom the sponsor intends to
adopt in Canada.

There is no minimum income requirement but you have to convince CIC that you and your spouse will not need social assistance (welfare) when living in Canada. And the best way to prove that is with proof of income in Canada. But you can convince them in other ways (proof of savings in bank accounts, etc). If you provide no proof of how you will make a living in Canada then your application will get more scrutiny.

Note that because you live outside Canada, you will also need to convince CIC that you and your spouse will be moving back to Canada. Things like accepting a job offer in Canada, signing a lease for an apartment, etc are all good proof.

I assume you are in Canada. You are a Canadian citizen, currently student and never ever availed any social assistance. There is absolutely no income requirement for you. But as other poster said, any personal savings and assets will give you a leverage towards expeditious decision provided of course you submit a perfect and complete application. All the best.
