Sponsoring Sibling

Hi there,

I am hoping to sponsor my sister and her dependent daughter but I'm not sure if there's a possibility to make this happen.

This is my current status -- PR holder, never married and no common law partner, salary is more than the LICO requirements, both parents are deceased.

I have read that I can sponsor my orphaned siblings if they are below 18, will it work if she is older that?

Do you have any relative that are Canadian citizen or PR?

• brother or sister
• uncle or aunt
• nephew or niece

If not, then I think you can sponsor your sister and her dependent.

Option 2: other relative
You may sponsor one relative, related by blood or adoption, of any age if you meet all of the conditions, including:

• you don't have a living relative you could sponsor instead, such as a:
  • spouse
  • common-law partner
  • conjugal partner
  • son or daughter
  • parent
  • grandparent
  • brother or sister
  • uncle or aunt
  • nephew or niece
• you don’t have any of the above-named relatives who is:
  • a Canadian citizen
  • a permanent resident
  • registered Indian under the Indian Act

If the relative you want to sponsor has a spouse, partner, or dependent children who will come with them to Canada you must include them on the same sponsorship application.

You may well be a candidate for the "Lonely Canadian" exemption.. One assumes that you have no living grandparents either...

Yes, I'm a first generation PR in the family.

No sibling
No aunt or uncle
No nephew or niece.

However, my partner is currently in Belgium and is eligible to apply for FSW Stream on the basis of their own qualification, if we marry in the future, will the sponsorship it have an impact on it?

Yes grandparents on both sides are deceased as well!

If you get married or become common-law with your partner, then you not eligible to sponsor your sister.

Sometimes, this type of application will take a while (years...). I think you will disqualify to sponsor (and have to notify immigration) if your marital status changes.

It could also take years for us to marry/be common law since my partner is on University contract for another 4 years!

I was just wondering if the Sponsorship was deemed successful -- is there a restriction to the sponsor not to marry or be common law? and how long?

I haven't seen such restriction.
But you will be responsible for your sister/dependents for 3 - 20 years as undertaking. (i.e. if they claim social assistance/welfare, you need to pay those back to the government)

• you must agree in writing to support your relatives for a set amount of time (three to 20 years)
