Hi friends,

I have applied for Express Entry under PNP in Nov 2019 as an outland applicant from India. I raised a webform and got to know that all the stages are cleared, only the PPR is due. But due to Covid-19, it is uncertain when IRCC will start rolling out PPR. My fiance is in Canada on student visa and would be applying for work permit in Jan 2021. We are not legally in a relationship yet and are planning to tie knots next year.
I am seeking suggestions regarding what would be the best possible ways to sponsor his PR.
  • Wait for my COPR, land in Canada and get into legal relation after getting my PR card (though it will be a delayed process as per the current situation)
  • Marry in India if he is able to travel before/after getting PPR/COPR (How this would impact my application ?)
  • Marry online and prove our relationship status, not sure if this is possible (we have been together in India and have many pictures together to prove our relation)
  • Or any other better solution
Thanks in advance.

Online marriages are not recognized by IRCC. This option is not possible.

If you get married before you land in Canada and officially become a PR, you will need to add him to your application and he will need to pass a medical and provide PCCs as part of this process. This will add a number of months to the overall process and you will need to wait until he has been added to your application before you'll be able to land and become a PR yourself. I would plan on this adding 4-6 months to the overall process.

If you get married after you have landed in Canada and officially become a PR, you would sponsor him through the family sponsorship process as your spouse. This process will take 1 to 1.5 years to complete (normally around 12 months but everything is taking longer now).
