Hi Everyone

I am in the process of applying for sponsorship for my wife through Canada class (inland sponsorship) and i see a clause in the undertaking given in form IMM1344 - I promise that the sponsored person and his or her family members will not need to apply for social assistance. Does this mean that if my wife becomes pregnant after becoming PR through this sponsorship process, she is not eligible to get EI from the government during her maternity leave period? What do they mean by family members of the person being sponsored? Does it include siblings, parents, kids? I also saw in this undertaking that the validity of this undertaking is good for upto 10 years from the date when my wife becomes a PR through this sponsorship program.

Can someone throw some light on this?

Family members are any dependants of the sponsor, anyone who is included in the sponsorship... this does not mean siblings or unsponsored parents. it means children or dependant parents.

EI and Mat leave don't count for social assistance. They are referring to welfare only. So if at some point your wife goes on welfare after getting pr, then you would be obligated to pay it back.

I'm not sure if it's different for inland applicants. for outland, the sponsor is agreeing to be financially responsible for the applicant for 3 years once PR status is approved. I'm not sure where the 10 years comes into play.

She is eligible for maternity benefits only if she qualifies based on her employable earnings. She would need to work at least 600 hours in the 12 month period before going on maternity leave, which can start 8 weeks before expected delivery date. If she doesn't work the 600 hours, she won't get any maternity benefits at all. This is the same rules for PR or citizens.
