Hi All,

I am looking at applying for PR in Canada and have started the process. I am seeking some guidance on sponsoring family members. I am single and have no kids, however I would like to sponsor my mother as well. I also have two siblings who are currently dependant on me, but I cannot sponsor them as they are over 18 but are both in school.

Should I include my mother in my initial application and thus by extension include my siblings or should I wait to hopefully receive a PR and then sponsor them from there?

Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

You cannot include your mother or siblings in your PR application - they are not classified as dependents.

Once you have moved to Canada, worked here for at least three years and have met the minimum income requirement in each of those years - you'll qualify to enter the lottery to sponsor your mother. If your siblings are under 22 and unmarried at that time, you'll be able to include them as dependents in your mother's applications. Otherwise they will have to qualify to immigrate on their own.

As mentioned it takes at least 3 years working in Canada making enough income to qualify, and then entering a lottery and hoping you're selected for one of the available spots to sponsor parents. Then as long as parent passes medical exam (so has no expensive medical conditions), they can become a PR..

Due to the unknowns of lottery odds and what medical conditions may arise in the next several years, when considering applying for PR you should prepare for possible scenario you will never be able to sponsor your mother and siblings ever.
