My husband (a Nigerian citizen) and I (a Canadian citizen) want to adopt a child from Nigeria. We have contacted the Nigerian authorities, and have started the paperwork.
To bring the child into Canada after adopting her, I do not sponsor her - she will be my child, so I can just apply for proof of Canadian citizenship for her.
However, when I contacted the office that handles foreign adoptions in my home province, I learned that this will not work. To adopt a child from overseas, I have to go through my province's social welfare office. Among other things, they have to do a home study and interview us. I pointed out that since my husband is in Nigeria, doing a home study would be impossible. The man I was talking to agreed, but said that if we did not follow the rules for foreign adoptions in my province, then they would not provide a 'no objection' letter, which I would need to get the child Canadian citizenship.

So my husband and I were thinking that he could adopt the child without me. I would then sponsor my husband as my spouse, and include his dependent child on the forms.

Would this work?

I know this post is a year old , but I was wondering if you ever received an answer to this question, or if you were able to do it? My husband and I were thinking of doing the exact same thing , we had planned on adopting in Quebec however he was ent back to Nigeria and we are now applying Outland so we thought that perhaps he could adopt a child there and I would sponsor both him and the child.
Thank you for any advice on this
