I am still not clear how a TRV exactly works. How long can my son stay in Canada with a TRV? Does he need a school acceptance letter to get a TRV? I am hoping someone can clarify exactly how it works. For how long is a TRV valid?

TRV is visitor visa. He is a visitor until he got his PR. Most of the time if he is grant a TRV, he will be allowed to stay for up to 6 months. Then you can apply to extend his stay before his 6 month's visitor status expires.
Some school districts will allow a visitor to study if parents are PR/residents in the area.
Can someone help me understand the difference between a TRV and a study Visa? I was hoping to get him an acceptance letter from a school (Elementary school) and apply for a study permit. Why not apply for a study visa? Is he allowed to study in a school with a TRV? Can someone please clarify this information. I feel lost. Schools told me that they do not provide acceptance letters. Thats what the school told me: He will not need to apply for study visa if the parents are coming to Canada on PR status and applying for PR status for your brother. He would most likely apply for visitor visa but best to check with Immigration.

Don't complicate things. A study visa is for those who will pay to study in Canada at foreign rates. It is not what you need.
You will have to bring him to Canada and then enroll (you can try to make arrangements with schools in advance but likely won't be easy). Some details depend on province. It may be possible to get him in a private school on the basis of trv depending on province (but of course not cheap); could still make sense for a period of time if you can afford it.
When I look online there are multiple types of TRV (Work, Visitor, Study). You are referring to the visitor visa?

How soon does your PRTD expire? TRV processing times aren't short right now. You want to get the TRV application in asap.
If the TRV takes a lot of time, we can go to Canada first and then he can come after us with my sister in law or his brother.
I am really sorry about all my questions but I need someone to help understand the process. After he gets the TRV and comes to Canada, how is he allowed to study with a Visitor Visa? Do we need to do something so that he becomes allowed to study (i.e. sponsor him)? Does he need to be in Canada to enroll him in a school? His brother already lives in Canada. Can he do something in the time being such as starting the sponsorship process or any of that?
- You cannot start the sponsorship process until either you or your spouse have moved back to Canada. So no, his brother cannot start the sponsorship process now.
- Yes, the child can travel at a later date with your sister in law or his brother once the TRV is approved.
- He will be able to study since you are PRs. You are over-worrying about this detail. Focus your energy and worry on getting the TRV approved. The TRV is not guaranteed to be approved. Get the TRV application in ASAP.
