Sponsored person is unemployed - is that a problem?

Hi,

I got married this winter and am doing the paperwork to sponsor my husband so he can come live with me in Canada.
He has been unemployed for the past 8 months and I wonder if that can have a negative effect on the sponsorship application?

If the person been sponsored (i.e., the Principal Applicant) is unemployed will not negatively affect the sponsorship application.

When you fill the forms......rightly indicate if the PA is Unemployed for Activity Type.

E.g....Question 6......Schedule A – Background/Declaration (IMM 5669)

Technically no, but they will want to know how the two of you will support yourselves without going on assistance

I topped up his phone and Internet accounts a couple of times and I also sent him money through Western Union a couple of times... I will keep on doing this then throughout the application process.

Although the Sponsor will need to show that they can support the person(s) you are sponsoring when accessing the Sponsor Eligibility to Sponsor........its not required that you transfer money to the PA throughout the application process.

However, its good to send money to the PA to support him financially........that's marriage.....support yourselves....

Will advice that you include the Western Union Transfer documents in your application package.........although not mandatory, but its a way to show........."Documentary evidence of financial support between PA and sponsor"......for Proof or Relationship - SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS FOR SPONSORED PERSON..........Question 7.e.........refer Spousal Sponsorship Checklist..

Please keep the Western Union Transfer documents.......when you file for tax, your Marital Status will change to MARRIED.......the transfers could be provided as proof of financially supporting your hubby.....just a suggestion.
