Hello all,

My husband has been called for an interview on Monday August 1st and we have more than enough evidence to prove that our relationship is genuine. My worry is , I sponsored him for permanent residence when I was inside Canada (working and all) and my husband was in Ecuador , but last year when I went to visit him for a month he convinced me to stay with him for a year. I am now in Canada , and just started working but basically I've been away for a year! Can this affect our application? Can it be refused? Could the officer find out whether I was living in Canada or not? Should I just be honest? PLEASE HELP.

I'm not 100% sure but i don't see why it should matter, as long as you have told the truth.
My husband is sponsoring me and he lives in the UK with me so you being away for a year shouldn't matter as long as you wrote everything in your application. :)

Are you a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident? A Canadian citizen can sponsor his/her spouse even while living abroad; a permanent resident is supposed to stay in Canada during the processing.

If you are a Canadian citizen, then having stayed with him will not hurt your application. Having lived with him is good evidence your relationship is genuine. Your husband should bring proof of your cohabitation with him to the interview - they probably asked him to bring evidence of your continued contact anyway.

The only problem is that if the Canadian citizen sponsor was living outside of Canada during processing, the visa officer wants to see evidence that the sponsor will be moving back to Canada. You have already done that, so give your husband evidence you are back in Canada and have a new job so he can show it to the VO if the VO has questions about your return to Canada.

Yes, I am a Canadian Citizen. I also have proof of my recent trips but what I don't have a lot of proof is my current job because I am working for my father in his small business . My main worry was that the officer would think that I am not financially stable to bring my husband ... other than that our relationship is more than genuine, I am so nervous and excited!

Thanks for the answers.

Now that you've returned to Canada and there have been changes in your employment, make sure your spouse is aware of them. Something I have noticed a lot in reading CanLII is that spouses can be shockingly unaware of their other half's circumstances in Canada. I have seen where spouses don't know if their partner lives in a house or an apartment, was unable to recite from memory the street address, knew nothing of their spouses' activities in the ordinary course of a day.

Ask yourself, does he know what I do? What I mean is, yes, he probably knows you work in your dad's business, but what exactly do you do in said business? These are the kind of mundane details they are looking for awareness of - what you do for work, how much money you make, what do you get up to when the two of you aren't on the phone/MSN/Skype/whatever you use to keep in touch. They may not ask him what your favourite toy was as a child, but he should be able to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of your day to day life, activities and functions.

These are the things couples who live together know about each other, and while you are not physically together, they want to get a sense that you are still building that foundation as best as possible.

Agree 100% with the above.

As well, your job is still a job, even if it is with your father. You can get an affidavit or letter from him detailing the work and salary, and send it to your husband with your payslips, if any, to show the VO if he/she asks about your income.
