Sponsored by Canadian common-law girlfriend?

Hey guys, new to this forum, finding it somewhat helpful but can't find my exact situation.

I'm an Aussie guy who has been living and working full time in Canada for 4 years now and I'm on my 3rd working visa. I live with my now common-law girlfriend (we've been living together for 2 years) and she's wanting to sponsor my PR. I plan on popping the question in a few months and hopefully married by the end of next year.

Only thing I'm not sure about is how her job situation could effect us. She quit her well paid job last April to go out and start her own business. In her first year self employed she only earned about $12,000 and mainly lived off her savings, and will continue to do so during my PR venture. If her situation still hasn't improved by July, she will go back to full time work.

Does anyone know if this will have a negative effect on her application to sponsor me??

Thanks in advance for any advice!! :)

When applying for PR for a spouse, common law or married partner, the sponsors income is irrelevant.. So her limited income will not affect your application in any way... So don't worry about that :)
Just have solid proof of your common law status- joint accounts, both your names on the place you are staying in etc etc...

Good luck :)

Thanks for the reply! The rest should be a piece of cake, fingers crossed, as we have plenty of proof of the relationship.

Also, should I apply inland or outland? If I apply outland (Sydney), are people often required to be present for an interview?

Most definitely apply outland through Sydney, faster than inland. Because you guys have lots of proof, you are visa-exempt and you have already been living in Canada for a few years, there is next to no chance of being called for an interview :).

Interviews are called for when CIC doubts the relationship is genuine. And majority of the time, this is when a non visa-exempt citizen marries a Canadian and CIC believes it to be a marriage of convenience so that person can come to Canada.

The only reason, in my eyes, to go inland route is so that you can start working, via an Open Work Permit, after stage 1 approval (6 months). Since you are already working in Canada, you can apply outland, get everything done super quick, and get PR fast. So, in your case, I would go outland.

And relating to the income question, pretty much they just don't want a sponsor to be on welfare, otherwise they can sponsor you with $0 income.
