Hi Everyone,
I became a Canadian PR in November 2016 and stayed in Canada for 1 month while coming back to my Job in Saudi Arabia. Since then I have been outside of Canada. I plan to get married in the coming month and wanted to know that in order to sponsor my wife to Canada do I need to complete 2 years out of 5 years in Canada (Residency Obligations) or do I just need to go back and get a Job before I sponsor my wife?

Thanks a lot for all your advise!

You need to meet the RO and be in Canada during the processing of her application. If you don’t meet the RO, they will refuse the application and start the process of revoking your PR. They will also reject it if you aren’t in Canada while it is being processed.

Edit: if you are just planning to come back right away, you can sponsor her right away.

Thanks for your reply. So as soon as I get back to Canada I can apply for the sponsorship without staying in Canada for over 2 years before the application? Thanks!

As long as you come back before you have spent more than 3 years out of Canada, yes, you can apply immediately. If you want her to stay with you while the application is processed, you should try and get her a TRV before you are married. It can be difficult to get a spouse a TRV while applying for a PR.

Thanks a lot for your advise! So getting a TRV before marriage will be a better option? and with a TRV she can stay with me and I can sponsor her application inland? Thanks!

It tends to be easier. Once married, they know that your spouse isn’t likely a tourist and will remain in Canada. If she can get one, she can stay in Canada. You would need to extend her stay before the 6 months is up. You can apply either inland or Outland. They both have advantages and disadvantages.
