What type of background check is done on the sponsor in Canada? How thorough is it? Does it include non-conviction records like police interaction and 911 calls?
I would like to sponsor my husband, I don't have any criminal record but I'm concerned about a couple of police interactions that my jeopardize my application.

Thanks

Were you arrested? Did you break the law and were caught? Do you have any court appearances with you as the defendant in a criminal trial? Did your interactions with the police lead to fingerprinting and photos being taken?

If you answered no to all of thise i think youre fine.

Thanks Gary for your response, I was never arrested or any of that.
Here's my problem, I was married outside of Canada for a very short period of time, I never registered my marriage with the Canadian government because it only lasted for a couple of months. We lived together for two months in Canada and the Police was called a couple of times for domestic dispute and there was cases and police reports opened . I got a marriage annulment from church so I went ahead and got married few years later but never mentioned anything about my previous marriage because it was annulled by the church and it took place outside of Canada and there was no record of it in Canada.
My question is would they find out about these domestic disputes calls? Should I consult a lawyer or apply and hope for the best?
Thanks

If you were legally married, you will need to disclose this in the application. It doesn't matter that you never `registered' your marriage with the Canadian government.

The domestic dispute could be a problem, but you need to tell us what really happened. You say that there were "cases and police reports opened", but...what exactly happened? Were you ever charged with anything, even if you were never convicted?

I Think you were legally married and it was considered legal in Canada as well. You should have mentioned it and clearly explained it...if somebody ever report you, it will for sure be proved that you have been married before and if CIC finds out that you never mentioned it, they won't ignore it. I am saying this not to scare you but I personally know many people being reported to CIC. Make sure you ex never find out about your plans. Mentioning it was a very good idea if your marriage ended because of abuse/violence, it would be an asset if you were sponsored and conditional residence would be removed.

Always stick with the truth no matter what.. If you are not at fault you will be fine. But never ever hide anything from CIC.. if you stick with the truth and reveal about ur previous marriage, then you will be fine.. if not it will haunt you always..
