Hi i was wondering if anyone can help...

I am on a Malaysian passport. But im a New Zealand Permanent Resident. My husband is a Canadian citizen, but grew up in New Zealand so lives in New Zealand.

He recently got a job offer to work in Canada, starting early July this year. I know that he can sponser me for Canadian PR, but my question is would this be on time for me to go over with him in early July??

What would my best option be? I was thinking i could apply for a visitors visa, then do the sponsorship when im there, but applying for a visitors visa, means showing that i will be leaving Canada (which is not the case for me as we plan to live there for a few years). I have no idea what the best option is and am running out of time.

If someone could please help, that would be fantastic.

Thanks! :)

The PR will never be done before sept.So July is out of the question. You can apply for a visitors visa and if approved then you come here and apply for a extension before the other runs out but also said you still have to prove you would return home once the visa expires. So apply for the visa and hope for the best but a PR never before july

Hi thanks for your response. So when applying for a visitor visa, do you know when would you need to show that you're leaving the country? I assume you dont need to buy return tickets before you enter canada?

From my experience, it is always a good idea to have return tickets when entering as a visitor. That was one question the immigration officer at the airport always asked me when I visited (four times so far). Also, to give you some idea, Korean travel agencies strongly recommend getting a round-trip ticket to Canada because "Immigrations may not let you in if you only have a one-way ticket". I actually didn't know the reasoning behind this until I started applying for PR, but I guess it's because they want to make sure you're going to leave at the end of your visit.

You don't need a visitor's visa from New Zealand. Couldn't you just go with him and then apply inland for PR once you're there? The downside is that you won't be able to work or anything while you're waiting, but at least you wouldn't have to wait in NZ without your husband.

Someone pleas correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a possible scenario, right??

Even if your visa exempt you are still only allowed to stay in Canada for months max you can apply for an extension but no Guarantees you will get it.And yes you do need a return ticket. They need to know your planning to leave. No country not even the US can come and stay as long as they please. And inland app take longer than outbound apps but the only downside to an outland is that if they require an interview you ave to return to whereever they require you to for that interview.
Even if you cme with your husband it still applies lik every country you must go through differnt customs and they will ask why your visiting and how long you plan to stay show your return ticket and give you the legnth of say up to 6 months.
An inland will not be processed in 6 months which means you will have to apply for the extension. And you need to prove to customs aqt the airport that you are leaving after your 6 months is up.
if it was as easy as you want it to be all of us on here would have our spouses with us right now.But its not that easy we are all separate for the same reason.

Also if you do get here and apply inland you can not leave Canada for ny reason while in process and i mean any reason. Not even to go home for a funeral, just letting you know what your up against.

Thanks all for your responses. Ok so far ive heard that its possible for me to apply for a temp residence visa (im on a malaysian passport) WHILE my pr is in process. This is what i heard from the embassy:

Entering Canada, prior to issuance of PR Visa: If you wish to go Canada while waiting for your permanent resident application to be processed you may enter Canada on an Australian/New Zealand passport as a visitor. Entry is, as always, at the discretion of the Port of Entry authorities. You may be granted a visa to stay as a visitor for up to 6 months but you will not be eligible to work in Canada. However you will need to satisfy the Port of Entry authorities that if your application for Permanent Residence is refused you would leave Canada.

If your application is approved you will need to send your passport to our office in Sydney. When you receive your passport with the permanent residence approval you will need to exit Canada and re-enter showing your passport.

...that was via email. In regards to their response, im not sure if there is a certain order i should follow for it to work. I.e. do i apply for the TRV first? then begin the PR process when im within Canada (as mentioned by iarblue), or can we begin the outland process after applying for the TRV, then once the TRV is approved, i visit canada, and wait for the PR process to be completed...?
