SOP necessary?

Hi, I am applying online for my study permit. Do I need a statement of purpose? I read so much on here about it but in my application it didnt mention anything about it.
I only read about a purpose of travel? Does anybody know what that is?

It is optional to attach SOP.
SOP is tool to express your motive and career plan.
