Hello,

I'm Canadian, my husband and our son will be with me in Canada as we wait for our outland application to be processed.
Do we have to ask for an extension of their 6 months status if the process takes longer than that?
If they don't have a flight back already booked (in the 6 months window of their visitor status) can it be a problem at the entry custom when flying to Canada?

Any advice appreciated!

Thank You

They need to have return tickets.

If they are from a non-visa exempt country, the airline won't allow them to board the plane for Canada without a return ticket.

If they are from a visa exempt country, it's still possible the airline may not allow them to board. If they are allowed to board, the one way ticket could cause problems at the border.

Thank You scylla, this is very helpful.

Can I ask You what if they have return tickets but outside of their 6 months visitor status, maybe 8 months after landing?

That could cause problems at the border. The return should be six months or less. Buy a ticket that allows changes if you want to potentially lengthen their stay.
