Hi,

I'm about to start an application to sponsor my wife. I have two girls and I'm just receiving Child care subsidy for one of them and the Alberta Adult Health Benefits for myself. Is any of these two considered social assistance?

Thank you for your time and help.

If the purpose of the Alberta Adult Health Benefit is disability it is not considered social assistance. Social assistance is basically only Welfare for purposes OTHER than disability.

Hi again,
The Alberta Adult Health benefit is not for disability reasons, and I just got it I haven't even used it. So this means I will need to cancel it before aplying?

Thank you for your fast response.

Don't take my word for it, but I am quite sure the AAHB would not qualify as social assistance. It is probably worth a phone call to the CIC call centre to make sure.

Child Tax Benefit is absolutely NOT considered assistance.

I don't think AAHB is considered social assistance for immigration purposes. CIC means people on welfare can't sponsor; they don't mean by that everyone who gets some money from the government, such as child tax credits, etc. Call the CIC hotline to be sure.

Thank you everybody for your quick and accurate answers, I just called the CIC and talked to an agent, he basically said that social or financial assistance refers to welfare, and that if I'm working I should be ok. Hope this help other people with the same confusion I had.

Thanks again!!!

Did u ever apply to sponsor while receiving the AAHB? I am now stressing because I just applied while receiving the child health benefits in Alberta and an agent at the health benefits office told me that I can't be receiving benefits while sponsoring.

Hello, I have a similar question but IRCC hotline can never reach now, I used a reduced dental fee service by AHS, for low-income family, do you think it counts as social assistance?

Instead of trying to find out from IRCC, contact the provincial agency providing the service. Ultimately the 'social assistance' restriction comes from what the provinces decide is social assistance (and report to IRCC if they choose to do so). So the chances are probably minimal that anyone at IRCC knows - it's up to Alberta.

Thank you for your prompt response. I sent a question to AHS about if that service is considered social assistance and also if there is any way to repay it, coz I just did a check-up once. But they are still in the process of relaying the message, no one can answer the question yet.

The service I used was in May, in case it is considered as social assistance and cannot be paid back, can I still proceed to the sponsorship now? provided that I do not use those services anymore.

So, my GUESS - only a guess - is that it's not considered social assistance. (Not worht explaining why since just my gut feeling guess)

I would say go ahead and apply. It will probably take some time to get a response anyway. You should likey get a chance to repay it when you find out and get it confirmed.
