A friend of a friend has offered my husband a construction job in Vancouver BC once he lands. The idea is that this will give him an opportunity to start working right away, while upgrading his english skills and gaining experience. It will also put him in contact with people working in various trades to help him decide on the stream he is most interested in pursuing.
I am currently located in Toronto and we assessing the advantages/disadvantages of taking up a trade in Ontario vs. BC with a view to long term employment, apprenticeships, etc. We really like the idea of starting fresh in a new place and having a job waiting is certainly a huge motivation to move. There is a demand for my employment experience in BC so that is not a huge concern.
House prices and cost of living is high in both provinces, but for overall quality of life in general, we are leaning toward BC. Skilled trades seem to be in demand everywhere but its hard to know if that translates into readily available jobs for new immigrants without a lot of experience.
Your thoughts would be appreciated!
