Sit for IELTS or Improve my General English First??!

I am now at the beginning of Upper Intermediate level.Do i need to continue improving my English before sit for IELTS?Can i get good score with that level?
I have tried to answer 2 modules of Ielts without speaking section and i got 6 in each except writing 5"Assessed by teacher"
