SIN No. for PhD Student with study permit

Hello,
I am a PhD student with study permit. I asked SIN No. from Service Canada in Saint-Hyacinthe, but they said that, I should give them 2 letter (1 student confirmation letter and 1 letter which shows that I am working at the university). However, my friends got SIN No. with study permit in Sherbrooke. Can I apply for it from another city (for example from sherbrooke)?

I think so. But maybe you should check with your school/dept first. They should be able to give you good enough documents to apply for SIN.
