SIN Needed

I have just got my open work permit can I look for work before I get my SIN or do I need to wait until I have it? Also how long does it take to come thrugh? Many thanks.

You can look for work before you get your SIN but your employer will not be able to pay you until you have it. When you go to Service Canada to get it, they will give you the SIN number right away but you will have to wait a couple of weeks to get the SIN card.

just one more addition - you do not need to wait till your SIN card arrives. the only thing employers look for is your number.

Just wanted to know--- when did you get your open work permit? Was it at your POE or did you apply later on? My hubby got a 1 yr work permit at POE but I wasn't given one when we entered. Just wondering if I should go to a border to get one or apply online.

I applied for my open work permit when we sent the stuff off for my residency visa. Its the 1 plus point of applying inland. I applied Dec 09, and finally got my work permit Sept 10. YAY... Tim Hortons hear I come.
