Hello everyone, I have a question about getting a SIN. I landed yesterday and tried to get a SIN at the Service Canada this morning. However, it seems like they are having problem to validate my information or something. Does anyone have the same problem before? They suggested me to do it by mailing the application form which will take up to 8 weeks to get it. Does it really take that long to receive one by mail?

Thanks in advanced

Yes, it really takes that long to receive one by mail.

HOWEVER, you shouldn't have to wait that long/apply by mail.

As a new PR, your COPR + Passport should be sufficient. Go back to Service Canada & if they still refuse, ask for a clear explanation why.

It could be that since you only landed yesterday, your information is not yet in the "system" as a PR. Give a week or so, go back and try again and also ask why that is happening.

The other thing - those that have a PR visa in their passport get a SIN immediately, while those with just a COPR (usually visa-exempt applicants e.g US, UK citizens) seem to need a PR card in order to get a SIN, though I've heard of exceptions.

I'm not sure the visa has anything to do with it, as countless visa-exempt people on this site who applied OUTLAND have gotten SINs immediately after landing (including my wife)... some literally minutes after in the same airplane terminal.

The problem I previously heard about, is INLAND applicants who got COPR at their landing interview had trouble getting SINs before they got the PR card. I think the COPR was slightly different vs an OUTLAND COPR.

OP you will need to be specific what they meant by "validate your information". There's a good chance the person you talked to at the SIN office was brand new or just didn't know what they were doing (common at many government offices).
