I went to Canada a couple of weeks ago on a long visit (3 months) but was refused entry. Firstly because they asked me if I was intending on working there, and my honest answer was no, then they looked on my computer and found something about working in Canada. This was merely research that I had done when the idea had crossed my mind in the past, and I hadn't deleted it. I explained this but they were sceptical. Then I was honest about my conviction (Drink-drinking over 7 years ago), and they denied me entry, they said because of a combination of the two, although the conviction being the more serious one. I've just sent my application for criminal rehabilitation and hope to get on the IEC this year. I know the IEC opening will come sooner than the processing of the rehab, but do I still have a chance of being successful getting on it, given that my rehab application is in the process?

1. No rehab, no IEC work permit.
2. Again with no rehab, the chances of being admitted are pretty close to nil.

What if I try entering as a visitor on a shorter term basis, with no 'evidence of wanting to work', and proving that my rehab is in the process? Surely the age of my conviction can mean that I'm deemed rehabilitated.

Until the rehab application is approved, you're inadmissible to Canada.
