RTD question

Hello folks!
I am a July 2023 applicant waiting for my PR. According to current processing time, I should be able to get my pr in next 7 months(hopefully). I am planing a trip to US and Japan while waiting for the pr. I am currently studying in a University as well and the term ends at April, giving me few months break to travel around.

I got to know that the travel documents for protected person and PR are different, and the expiration are different too (2year vs 5year).

I feel hesitated to apply for RTD now because of schedule.
  • If I apply now, I should apply the 2year one, and once I get PR in next few months, it would become invalid?
  • if I apply once I get my PR in July 2025, I waste my time from April to whatever the processing done.
Will the 2year RTD still valid once I obtain my status as PR? That solve all my problem.
Any insight or suggestion?

Thanks a lot

You remain a protected person until you are a Canadian citizen. Given that you have to get a US visa you should be applying for your RTD now and hope you can get a US visa appointment if one is required. The wait times are very long. Assume you may also need to get a visa for Japan.

If you got 2 years validity refugee travel document its also valid if you got your pr in 2 years. Only difference before pr 2 years and after pr 5 years validity. That’s all. So you can keep using yours 2 years validity travel document even if you got your pr later.
Proccessing time is 25 months now. Looks like July August 2025 for you. Around 9 months. Better get rtd for 2 years now.

I think you may have misunderstood the Travel Document options. As a protected person you only have one option which is to apply for a Refugee Travel Document so you can travel form and to Canada.

Your RTD does not become invalid when you become a Permanent Resident of Canada. RTD is a 'passport' and you will continue to use your RTD for travel for the entire time you are a protected person until you are a citizen of Canada- there isn't another option for Protected Persons.

Only when you get your citizenship or if your RTD expires, your RTD becomes invalid.

Also there is no way to apply for a 2 year RTD, you just apply for an RTD and IRCC will give you however long they deem fit. I got my first RTD (before PR) for 2 yrs and my 2nd RTD (after PR) for 5 years. Others have had different experiences.

Hope this helps, good luck!
