I am wondering if my son has the right to apply for Canadian Citizenship as he was born in the Philippines to a Canadian father? He was born on July 20, 1988 and shortly before he turned one year old, I never heard from his father anymore. My son never had the chance to see his father.
More than two years ago in my search in the internet I came to know that my son's father died sometime in 1988.
It has been my son's desire to see his father's place or if possible to apply for a Canadian citizenship.
If the proof of citizenship of his father will be one of the requirements I have no idea how to acquire it as I don't have any contact in Canada.
Hoping for the soonest answer to this query.
More power and God Bless!

You would need the documents of his father which can be difficult as he has died. You could start by discussing this with the Canadian embassy. You could also try to get a copy of his birth certificate from the vital statistics in Canada in the province where he was born. There is a list of these offices here: http://www.passport.gc.ca/cdn/cert.aspx?lang=eng&region=Canada

If you do not know where his father was born, you would have to try all of them. He should write a letter stating that he needs this in order to apply for his citizenship card. He should send a copy of his own birth certificate and passport to show who he is and that the man was really his father to avoid them thinking he wants the birth certificate for some illegal purposes.

Re: My son's desire to be a Canadian Citizen

Thank you so much for the reply. I really appreciate it. It took me almost a year before I work on this again as I thought that my son's case is a hopeless one.
I and my son has the difficulty in securing the documents of his father on line as we're not really knowledgeable about this. Is there any chance we ask the Canadian Embassy for help to secure such documents

My son's dad was born in Saskatchewan. We knew this when we started our search through their ancestry.
Can you please send me the direct contact to the agency concerned in Saskatchewan?

Could only hope that I hear from you again. Thank yo so much again and God bless!

I would like to correct the year of the death of Lloyd. I mistakenly written it 1988 instead of 1998.
Thanks a lot.

Couple of technical questions on this one for the experts...

a) Were the parents legally married? (Does it matter?)
b) Would Canada require DNA proof of biological parentage?
