Returning to CA after 7 years accompanying citizen spouse - work with Travel doc

I landed as PR in November 2007 and left Canada to accompany citizen spouse in 2010. I don't have my PR card, as it was lost in a move. I know that I will need to apply for a PR travel document to fly back, and that establishes as still being in compliance with PR obligation (have accompanied citizen spouse whole time, so no real concern about travel doc).

Am I able to work with the travel doc showing I am a PR, or would employers require the PR card?
Is it worthwhile to request the verification of status prior to applying for travel doc?
How long is the travel doc valid for?
Has anyone here applied for the multiple visit travel doc? I read on CIC site that you could include a cover letter requesting this.

To work you'll need a valid SIN, and since you've been gone so long yours may have been deactivated. You'll need to confirm with the necessary government department upon returning how to reactivate it.

Once you have valid SIN, that should be enough for you to work. Though I guess ultimately this depends on your specific employer if they also demand to see a valid PR card or other proof of valid status.
