Hello all
I, a returning resident, and my partner, a new resident, are working on our B4 list for customs when we arrive in Canada and I have some questions...
1. Do we need to submit separate forms in each of our names or, as we are common-law, can we just consider it all "ours" and submit it in one name or the other? We will have a goods with us and goods to follow list but splitting it into each of our names just seems like more paperwork than is needed and we both have the right to bring in whatever we want duty free...
2. What do I do about things that were purchased in Canada, taken overseas with me, and are now being taken back to Canada? Most of our valuable items are from Canada so I'm not sure if I'm supposed to list them or not. I guess if we're not having to pay duty on things I could just list them anyway? But then, for example, I have a diamond that was my mother's with me that I will bring back into Canada but I don't have any valuation or receipt or anything for it.... does it matter?
3. I know we are supposed to clump things into groupings and give an overall value... as home decor a reasonable grouping? That's for non-valuable art and household items (lamps, wooden masks, etc).
4. Anyone know Canada's policy on woodwork? Coming from Africa we have quite a lot of wood carvings, etc... do we need treatment certificates or anything like that?
and lastly - anyone have experience coming in through Vancouver International Airport with all their stuff? Due to shipping costs we're taking everything as excess luggage (all 12 boxes and our dog!) Just wondering if they ever actually open the boxes to check them or not. Between clearing the dog and my partner doing his landing, we're really hoping customs won't take too long... we're going to be there for ages as it is.
