What could be the cause of a spousal sponsorship application being returned?

Would it be returned for something as small as an obvious typo or spelling mistake?

Would I be contacted about anything if they have questions or does that fall into the return category?

If my application was returned what would happen?

Is it possible for my OWP app to be accepted but have my visa application returned when they were sent together?

I am about to send my application and if it is returned I will have no status in Canada as of less than 1 month from now. I looked into extending my current visa but I am already too late for that. I am extremely stressed and worried so any information or advice is greatly appreciated.

Apply to extend your stay as well. Youre not to late. If it is returned and you have no status you will need to apply to restore your status

Errors that result in the application being returned are things like missing signatures, missing fees, and wrong forms. A small typo will not result in the application being returned. If the sponsorship application is returned the OWP will be as well. The OWP and inland application are tied together.

As long as you still have status in Canada it is not too late to extend. The extension application just has to reach IRCC before your current one expires. Best option is to extend your current visa so that you give yourself protection against the sponsorship application & OWP being returned.

Apply online for a visitor extension. The 30 days before "deadline" is only a recommendation. It doesn't actually matter.

Is the visitor extension a visa or a record? I do not want to leave Canada and return, I just want to stay. Will I have to state that the reason I want the visa/record is because my other visa hasn’t been sent yet?

You will be applying to extend your stay as a visitor and if approved, will receive a Visitor Record.

Give the reason that you are applying for spousal sponsorship. Include a copy of the PR fee receipt.
