My son lives with his wife in Canada under a work permit pending approval of his permanent residency application. He booked flights to visit his family in the UK whilst this was his situation. He has just received his eCoPR confirming his permanent residency but has not yet received his PR Card. I understand that receipt of the eCoPR invalidates his work permit. He is due to travel this weekend. How can he get back into Canada without a PR Card or valid work permit? I’ve read about a PRTD but how long does that take to process? He’s only in the UK for 9 days.

The work permit is canceled once he lands and becomes a PR. He cannot use that to return.

His options are:
- travel with a valid PR card
- travel with a valid PRTD (this can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks and he can only apply once outside of Canada)
- fly to the US on the way home and the re-enter Canada through a land border crossing

Thank you for this helpful information. I don’t think his PR Card will arrive by Friday when he is due to travel and the PRTD option sounds too risky given there’s only 9 days in the UK between his flights. He’ll have to explore option 3 or cancel his flights and lose his money. All seems grossly unfair.
