Return Ticket Duration

I managed to get my mother a TRV. On our invitation letter we specifically indicated that she will only stay for two months with us. Now we are shopping for a return ticket since we were told that we are required to buy them. But they always quote us for six months stay. We do wish for our mother to stay for six months - that would be very nice.

Can we purchase a return ticket with six months duration even though our letter of invite specifically indicated that she will only stay for two months with us? Will this be a problem at the border when they interview her for them to decide how long she can stay in Canada? If we do purchase just two months duration return ticket --- will the VISA officers at the border just give her 2 months duration on her passport? We truly hope that she gets six months duration though.

We wish our mother to stay six months if possible. Any advise would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Buy 2 months tickets because the boarder officer may be suspicious. They will most likely give her a standard visa duration, not necessary 2 months. Also you can always extend her visa once she is in Canada and change the ticket

Thanks - but how would the visa officer know that our invitation letter only stated 2 months since my mother will only carry with her her passport with visa on it? Does the visa officer check the whole TRV application documents of all incoming TRV at the border?

Your mother will possibly be asked by CBSA purpose of visit and how long she is planning to stay. Whatever was said on the original TRV application becomes irrelevant once someone reaches CBSA at the border which will be where the actual length of stay will be determined based on CBSA assessment at the time. No way obviously to predict in advance length of stay all anyone can do is answer questions honestly without volunteering anything extra and remain positive that they get the default 6 month stay.

I'm not sure, but I do think they can check if they want to. Iven if they dont check, they may simply ask why is she planning to stay 6 months and who will be suppprting her. She will have to justify her stay then.

Ok - so let us say that she wanted to stay three months as she wants spend time with her grand children and hopefully tour around Canada depending on the weather (she'll be arriving late November) but she has a six months return ticket since we simply could not predict how long she can stay - that would still be viable right? We can just reschedule her return ticket to an earlier date if she was indeed given a duration less than six months.

You could buy a return ticket which allows for a date change. Her return flights could be booked for two months after her initial entry. You can then re-book/change it later depending on the length of stay given by the CBSA officer (it would most probably be 6 months)
