Return flight tickets before travel

My parents are coming to Canada on trv. As per expert advise here; for better chances of visa approval they had only requested visa for three weeks. Actually they would like to stay longer than that. Is it necessary that they should have the return tickets too while they board the flight? Is it an airline requirement or at the immigration would they ask for it. Can they book a return ticket later than three weeks different from what they asked during trv application.

It is advised that return tickets are bought before the trip starts.

Some airlines for some countries demand that a return ticket is shown at boarding time. Some do not. You will have to check with the airline in to clarify this.

CIC usually wants to see return flights. Again, depending on the nature of the trip and documentation/evidence provided this vary. Failure to show return tickets can render a short visit period. This is up to the CBSA agent making the assessment in the point of entry.

Return tickets works out cheaper so any visitor should go for that option , as for a Visitor Visa , immigration could definitely ask you to show a return ticket, although might not ask also.

That being said , once you have the TRV it doesn't matter that you book the ticket for 3 weeks or three months , even if its different from the application.

Hope that helps.
