Hey. Just wondering if anyone could help me on this? I know this sort of thing often really depends on the which immigration official you land, but anyway.

I'm a British citizen and the start of next year I plan to backpack around Canada, USA and Mexico for 8 months. Looking at flights it seems my best option is to get a return flight to Canada and then a flight back to Canada from Mexico City at the end of my trip. Is this likely to land me in some difficulties with border officials?

If it will i'm tempted to just get my return for earlier and change the date when I'm there. Although this will cost another $150 it seems, it's still cheaper than getting two single flights.

You can do this any way you want.
What you need to show is that you can support yourself, have medical cover and can prove that you are going to leave Canada - typically within 6 months.

IMO a return ticket in and out of Canada is not that different to a set of flights that run as follows:
UK to Canada, Canada to Mexico (or USA) other travel arrangements, then a final return flight to the UK.
