Response times on postal applications

Hello, sorry to ask another dumb question. My wife is Canadian and we live in London (UK), planning to move to BC this summer. We sent off her sponsorship application and my PR application to Missasauga about a month ago.

There seems to be no way to track the status of the application or to discuss your case until they have responded with a client ID number or application number. I know that the processing times are about 17 months but by then I will have moved at least twice, be resident in Canada, and will have changed my UK passport. I'm worried that I won't be able to keep my details up to date and that I might have to keep resubmitting the damned application.

So the question is: how long does it usually take CIC to open an envelope and give you a reference number?

Correct, you'll get an e-mail with your UCI which you can then use to log in to eCAS.

The processing times IRCC list as 17 months are very misleading, as every VO is different. I'm not particularly familiar with London's average times, a quick glance at the 2015 outland sheet shows 8-12 months for a few forum members.

So the question is: how long does it usually take CIC to open an envelope and give you a reference number?

Looks like average time for AOR is coming down, it was 55 days for the December group, but looking at the 2016 Outland sheet I'm seeing a lot around 40 days.
