It would be unusual to be a Canadian citizen living in Canada and not have a SIN, though, I suppose if one never worked and never filed a tax return, there wouldn't be an absolute need for one. Canadian citizens by descent (most of whom don't even live in Canada) would likely not have SINs either.
Sorry.....I didn't explain exactly...I'm Italian but I got my Canadian citizenship by descent...that's why I still don't have a SIN number......but now, I'm studying in Canada and I need it. I thought the Canadian passport was enough. Thank you for the answers.....
1. Contact CIC on their call centre and request verification of status in Canada (there is a charge for this service)
2. After you receive this document, You should be able to go to service canada in order to get a SIN.
3. If Service Canada won't accept this document, you will have to request a Citizenship certificate from CIC, the call centre will be able to assist you with this.
I guess technically. Though you can't have a valid Canadian passport without being a citizen. In most cases a passport is accepted as proof of citizenship (OHIP does).
