Renting a townhouse vs an apartment

Dear all,

I just had this question in mind if renting a townhouse is cheaper and better than an apartment, particularly in North York, Toronto. I find many websites having cheaper townhouse rentals. Is there a difference in utilities expenses in the two? I need a 2 BR apartment or townhouse and my budget is $1200-1400. My kids are afraid of high-rise buildings.

Seniors like Qorax, PMM and others plz advise.:)

Thanks,
Coolangy

In my opinion a Townhouse would be better, you will have more space, but sometimes when you rent an apartment the utilities (gas, electricity) are already included, you need to ask that to the landlord. The cost of electricity is around 120-160 each two months, and the Gas is around 80 dollars per month (you can sign in a plan that keeps this value the same all the year).

Thanks, can you advise some good areas in North York. Also please tell how early should I book it as I'm planning to land in the first week of September.

1. Townhouses will be around 1400-1600/month... the fairly good ones, in NY. Anything lesser would be in older bldgs... choice of which is a personal opinion.

2. Good areas r anything along Yonge St., between Yonge/Sheppard & Yonge/Finch.

3. U may move upwards & sidewards towards Don Mills -- things might come by 1200/month too there -- in older bldgs.

4. Comparative Townhouses will always be pricier than Condos... unless the condo is a new & posh one.

I think is hard to book in advance since you really need to take a look at the neighborhood and the general conditions of the townhouse/apartment, pictures not always show all the details.

You should plan in arriving to an furnished apartment/hotel and start looking immediately for a more permanent home.

You shouldn't have any problems if your credit is good and you have enough for the downpayment then go for it. Its obvious you can pay your mortgage on time because of your income, so good luck.
