My wife renounced her Canadian residency in 2011, but since then, every time she enters Canada with her US passport, she is automatically directed to see an immigration officer that simply welcomes her to Canada with a smile.

I was wondering if you can provide any thoughts or guidance as to how to avoid this step–which is a waste of time and tax payers money. We’re told by the last officer that this is a way to "punish" individuals who have given up their residency due to not meeting the residency requirements. Thanks!

Individuals who give up their PR status aren't punished. I know a couple of people who have done this and have no issues at the border. There must be another reason why her profile is flagged based on something that happened in the past. Generally speaking, you can't remove these flags. My recommendation would be to get a Nexus card. That should solve the problem.

Is she entering Canada often? Are you living in Canada? Those can also trigger concerns.

Thanks for your input. We have considered applying for Nexus but wonder if that would address this situation, especially if her file is permanently flagged.
I guess one way to find out is to apply.
